Frequently Asked Questions

Questions before you book? Start here.

We’ve answered the most common ones below. If yours isn’t here, the consultation is the best place to get it answered.

Do I really need bookkeeping if I can do it myself?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and one of the most important to get right. Bookkeeping might seem straightforward, but it’s the foundation of everything. Accurate books are what make tax planning possible. Without clean financials, we can’t identify opportunities, we can’t prepare accurate returns, and we can’t give you a clear picture of how your business is actually performing.

Think of it this way. A great real estate agent would never tell their client to list their own home to save money on commission. The professional does it better, catches what gets missed, and the outcome is worth far more than the cost. Bookkeeping works the same way. We don’t charge a lot for it. We include it because our clients need it and because everything else we do depends on it being done right.

The threshold is straightforward. If your active income is over $100,000, there is opportunity being missed. At that income level, the tax code opens up planning strategies that can meaningfully reduce what you owe. Our goal is always the same: save you more in taxes than you pay us. If we don’t believe we can do that for your situation, we’ll tell you on the consultation call.

You won’t have to wonder. We show you.

At the end of every tax season, we send every client a personal video walkthrough of their tax return, showing exactly what Knit CPAs did, what strategies we implemented, and what it saved them in taxes. Line by line. So you never have to wonder whether the investment is paying off. You can see it clearly, every single year.

Our tax planning clients stay with us. That’s not a coincidence. It’s because the value is visible and measurable every year.

Much easier than you think. We hear this concern a lot and it’s one of the biggest reasons people stay with a CPA longer than they should. In reality, switching is simple. We request your prior year tax returns, get you onboarded into our systems, and handle the transition from there. If you’re already on QuickBooks Online, we just need to update the access and we’re ready to go.

We’ve done this many times and we make it as painless as possible. Most clients are surprised by how smooth it actually is.

We do offer standalone tax preparation services. If you’re a smaller operation that doesn’t yet need full bookkeeping support, we can quote tax preparation on your consultation call. For many clients, tax preparation is the starting point. As their business grows and the opportunity for tax planning increases, the relationship naturally evolves from there.

Getting started is straightforward. Once we agree on services and pricing, here’s what happens:
  • You’re set up in our client portal and sign your engagement letter
  • We schedule your onboarding call where we build your financial infrastructure, get you
set up in our systems, walk you through our process, and give you clear guidelines for
    how we work together
  • Our team catches up your bookkeeping and delivers your year-to-date financials
  • We schedule your first planning call where we review the profitability of your business,
present tax planning opportunities, and decide together which strategies make sense for
    your situation
  • From there we handle all the back-end documentation and execution

The goal of onboarding is simple. Get you fully set up in a system that runs in the background of your life, so you know exactly what to do without having to think about it.

Same day. Once we agree on the level of services and the pricing, we get to work immediately. There’s no waiting period and no lengthy intake process. We sign the engagement letter and kick off onboarding right away.

That’s exactly what the consultation is for. Every package we offer is custom fit to the client. We’re not going to oversell you on services you don’t need or leave you underserved with a package that doesn’t fit. If your situation is more complex or more simple than a standard package, we’ll figure that out together on the call and build something that actually makes sense for where your business is today.

Absolutely. Although we are based in Michigan and spend part of the year in Florida, we work with clients throughout the United States. In fact, the majority of our client base is outside of Michigan. Geography has never been a barrier. Everything we do can be handled remotely, and our clients consistently tell us the service feels personal and responsive regardless of where they are.

We use best-in-class tools that keep everything organized, accessible, and running smoothly:

  • TaxDome — our client portal where everything lives
  • QuickBooks Online — for bookkeeping and financial reporting
  • Gusto — for payroll
  • HubSpot — for receipt capture
  • MileIQ — for mileage tracking

If you’re already using QuickBooks Online with a previous accountant, the transition is simple.
We just need to update the access and we’re ready to go.
